Tips to prepare for severe weather conditions

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- Thunderstorms are on the horizon now that spring has arrived and severe weather could be trickling in with it.

This includes the risk of tornadoes, hail and damaging winds, all of which are possible late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. In the event of severe weather, it's important to be prepared with essential items such as flashlights, phone chargers, bottled water and spare batteries.

"We always remind people to stay informed," Frank Till of the St. Joseph safety council said. "Keep, updates on the weather, either, through your local media or through other sources. When a bad storm's going, stay inside. Stay away from, windows because, flying debris and high winds and hail can can break windows and and send debris flying."

If any severe weather is occurring, the safety council recommends not using anything connected to an electrical outlet as their is a risk of being electrocuted.

"Try to avoid using electronic appliances during a thunder and lightning storm," Till said. "Sometimes lightning can cause power surges that can harm you through, your electrical appliances."

It's also advised to move your car into a covered area to prevent damage from hail.
