ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Rocco Becht scored from a yard out on fourth-and-goal with 56 seconds remaining and No. 18 Iowa State capped the best season in school history by rallying past No. 15 Miami 42-41 in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday. Becht finished with 270 yards passing and three touchdowns for Iowa State (11-2), a program that entered this season never having won more than nine games in a year. Cam Ward threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns for Miami in his college finale.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Cam Ward has made NCAA history in his final college game. The Miami quarterback has thrown a record-setting 156th touchdown pass of his college career, connecting with Jacolby George for a 4-yard score with 4:12 left in the first quarter of the Pop-Tarts Bowl. That’s the Division I — FBS and FCS — record, one more than Houston’s Case Keenum threw for from 2007 through 2011.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Rahjai Harris broke free for an 86-yard touchdown run with 1:33 remaining, giving East Carolina a pulsating 26-21 victory over NC State in the Military Bowl in a game that descended into a wild brawl in the final minute. Harris had 220 of ECU’s 326 yards rushing, and his sensational sprint near the end of the game gave the Pirates the lead back after they’d blown a 13-point advantage in the fourth. After an interception by Dontavius Nash ended NC State’s final drive, East Carolina’s attempt to run out the clock was interrupted by a large-scale fight between the two in-state rivals — who play each other again to start next season.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — East Carolina and NC State began brawling near the end of ECU’s 26-21 victory in the Military Bowl. And the teams won’t have to wait long to see each other again. They face off to open next season. Emotions were understandably high for this matchup. NC State and East Carolina are about 80 miles apart. They don’t play every season, but they’ve been on each other’s schedule plenty over the years. An interception gave East Carolina the ball with 44 seconds left, needing only to run out the clock. After a run up the middle, the fight broke out around the hash marks closer to the ECU sideline.
BOSTON (AP) — Joe Fagnano threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help UConn beat North Carolina 27-14 in the Fenway Bowl, embarrassing Bill Belichick’s new team in his old backyard. Belichick was not spotted in the home of the Boston Red Sox, about an hour north of the stadium where he and Tom Brady hung six Super Bowl championship banners. Interim coach Freddie Kitchens, who like Belichick is a former Cleveland Browns coach, took over when Mack Brown was fired and handled the bowl preparations. Mel Brown rushed for 96 yards for the Huskies.
NEW YORK (AP) — Dylan Raiola passed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska built an 18-point lead through three quarters and hung on to beat Boston College 20-15 Saturday for its first bowl victory since 2015. After Nebraska built a 13-2 lead in the first half on scoring runs by Rahmir Johnson and Kwinten Ives, Raiola hit Emmett Johnson with a 13-yard TD pass on fourth down with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-2 edge and the Cornhuskers (7-6) held on for the win. Raiola completed 23 of 31 passes in front of a sizable Nebraska crowd that celebrated the team’s first bowl win since topping UCLA in the 2015 Foster Farms Bowl and first winning season since 2016.
BOSTON (AP) — Donald Hand Jr. scored 15 of his career high 29 points in the first half and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Boston College beat Fairleigh Dickinson 78-70. Chad Venning scored a season-high 18 points for Boston College. Ahmed Barba-Bey’s 3-pointer with 39 seconds left made it 74-70 but Hand answered with a layup 10 seconds later and followed with two free throws that capped the scoring with 18 seconds to play. Barba-Bey hit eight 3-pointers and led Fairleigh Dickinson with a career-high 31 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Terrence Brown added 20 points and Bismark Nsiah scored 10, all in the second half. Boston College won for just the second time since beating Boise State on Nov. 26 to start the season 6-1.
ATLANTA (AP) — Lance Terry scored 22 points, Javian McCollum scored 18 off the bench, and Georgia Tech buried Alabama A&M 92-49. Jaeden Mustaf had 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Baye Ndongo had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech shot 54% for the game and made 10 of 21 3-pointers. After shooting 60% and scoring 50 points in the first half, the Yellow Jackets turned it over to their defense in the second half. Georgia Tech held Alabama A&M without a field goal for the first 5:45 after halftime and the Bulldogs missed 18 of their first 21 shots in the second half, making only three 3-pointers in 12 tries. Their first two-point make was a jumper by Darius Ford with 4:22 remaining.
