Local Chiefs fans buzzing after back-to-back Super Bowl titles (copy)

In the eyes of many Kansas City Chiefs fans in St. Joseph, last night’s dramatic comeback victory in Super Bowl 58 reaffirmed one important thing: Don’t ever count out Patrick Mahomes.
“We didn’t play our best football the first half … but we always got the wild card Patrick Mahomes. And you don’t ever bet against Patrick Mahomes,” St. Joseph resident and avid Chiefs fan Steve Marshall said. “He is not an underdog. We pulled it out in the second half and we always had faith.”
Marshall, a 30-year Chiefs supporter, was one of many in St. Joseph still buzzing the day after Sunday’s historic win saw the team cement itself in NFL history as a dynasty with their third Super Bowl in five seasons.
Marshall was in attendance for the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl win in 50 years when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Miami in 2019. After years of watching the team come up short, he’s relished seeing his beloved Chiefs become a perennial powerhouse and be the first team in 20 years to win back-to-back championships.
“Well, we’re getting used to it. We hadn’t won the Super Bowl in 50 years and we got to see that and it just seems like one record after another now,” Marshall said with a laugh.
Across town, Super Bowl apparel and merchandise were flying off the shelves from Rally House to Dicks Sporting Goods and more as fans rushed to find whatever they could get their hands on. Rally House received another large shipment of apparel Monday after selling a large chunk of their merchandise in the hours after the Super Bowl.
St. Joseph resident and longtime Chiefs fan William Cook was out shopping at Rally House after spending Sunday night with a large group of his friends who traveled from all over the country for their now-annual Super Bowl gathering. With another Lombardi Trophy now on the Chiefs’ mantle, he’s not taking the Chiefs’ latest run of dominance for granted.
“Growing up, we had some tough seasons, so it’s been fun to be the city that, like, gets to have the next dynasty,” Cook said. “You just don’t want it to end. So yeah, just not wanting it to end in, like, really trying to cherish the moments that we’re, you know, getting to be the face of the NFL.”
Beyond the excitement of watching Patrick Mahomes and Co. reach the NFL’s highest mountaintop once again, he’s thrilled for the younger members of his family who now get to witness a historic era of Chiefs football.
“I’ve got like 13 nieces and nephews so I’m just thinking about them,” Cook said. “Being 8, 9, 10 years old, growing up like, this is going to be some of the fondest memories ever, you know, just having constant Super Bowls …”
Much like Marshall, Cook was confident in the Chiefs’ chances of rallying back despite having only 3 points scored with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Sunday’s win was the third time Mahomes erased a 10-point deficit in the Super Bowl. He broke the hearts of San Francisco fans in 2019 when he rallied from 10 down in the fourth quarter to claim his first Super Bowl.
“If anyone’s going to be down 10, like, we’re the team to do it for sure,” he said.
