ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- St. Joseph city leaders proclaimed March 31 as "Benton Cardinals Recognition Day" in honor of both boys and girls basketball squads reaching the state championship game this season.

City leaders awarded the proclamation at Monday's City Council meeting with various players and coaches in attendance, recognizing the teams for their historic seasons and second-place state finishes.

The boys' state title game appearance was the first since 1941, while the girls continued their run of dominance with a third title appearance in four seasons.
