Coy signs with Omaha baseball

Benton senior Chris Coy will take his talents up north after signing with the University of Nebraska Omaha on Thursday to continue his baseball career.
After initially committing to the University of Kansas back in 2022 prior to his sophomore year, the Benton senior decommitted from KU back in early October, reopening his recruitment. Fast forward nearly three months later, Coy will still play at the Division I level.
“I’ve seen a lot of guys sign pretty early, so yeah, I wanted to sign right away. But I want to make sure I find the right fit. I had the option and Omaha ended up [being] everything I was looking for, so it worked out,” Coy said.
Coy is coming off a superb junior campaign with the Cardinals baseball program. In 2024, with Coy leading the charge, Benton broke the program record for wins in a season and came away with a second place finish in the Class 4 state tournament. Ahead of his senior campaign, Coy is happy to have his college signing out of the way, so that he can focus on potentially outdoing what the team accomplished last year.
“There’s a lot of people that may be doubting us after losing a lot of seniors, I kind of want to prove them wrong and go out there and show them what we got,” Coy said.
Division I commits are nothing new to the Coy family, and it’s helped Coy in his decision making prior to his signing. Coy’s uncle Johnny Coy, Benton’s baseball coach, is also a former Division I baseball player himself. Coy played baseball at Wichita State University from 2010 to 2013. Coy considers his uncle a great “wingman.”
“[Johnny’s] been through it all, so having him by my side and helping me get through that has been a great help,” Coy said.
