Savannah boys hand Hogan Prep another defeat

By Jacob Meikel
Savannah boys basketball is off to a 1-0 start after defeating Hogan Prep 62-50 in the first round of the 96th Annual Savannah Boys Basketball Invitational.
Wins had not been easy to come by in the regular season opener for Savannah. Monday’s victory marked the first win in a regular season opener since 2019 for the Savages.
Savannah got itself started on the right foot against an inferior Hogan Prep team that entered off of a loss last week against Lone Jack. An early 8-0 run by Savannah to get the game started prompted a timeout by Hogan Prep to get itself situated. The early timeout by the Rams proved to be beneficial, as they would end the first quarter down just 14-12 despite the hot start by Savannah.
However, Savannah would steadily create more and more distance from its opponent, leading by seven at halftime, 17 after the third quarter and eventually finishing the game with the 12-point win in which the Savages scored just six points in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Zyler Snapp got the start for Savannah, and was neither intimidated or bashful in his first start at the varsity level. Snapp finished with nine points in his first start. Fellow freshman for Savannah Dax Gauert contributed 12 points off the bench, all of which came from the three-point line in the third quarter. Senior Aiden Knechtenhofer led the Savages in scoring in the victory with 14 points.
Savannah advances to the semifinal round of their home invitational on Wednesday night and will play Chillicothe for a chance to play in the championship game on Friday.
