GAME OF THE WEEK:
Central 21, Benton 14
The matchup between Class 5 Central and Class 3 Benton has been lopsided for the last two years. Central won the previous two matchups against the Cardinals by an average of 31 points per game heading into Friday’s contest.
Offense was hard to come by for the Cardinals in the first half, trailing 14-0 at the break. Before it looked as though the Indians would run away with yet another victory over its in-city foe, Benton awoke in the third quarter.
Down 21-0 in the third quarter, Benton would then score 14 unanswered points to make the score 21-14 midway through the quarter. Central would come out on top, but the Cardinals would suffer its smallest margin of defeat to the Indians since the recent series started in 2022. Central senior Gabe Fields finished Friday’s game with two touchdowns on the ground.
Benton falls 21-14 to Central.

St. Joseph’s two 8-man teams put big numbers on the board Friday. At Bishop LeBlond, Trey Icke was the story, opening up the scoring with a touchdown off the direct snap to himself in a matchup with the visiting Schuyler County Rams. Later in the game, Icke was a star on both sides of the ball, getting a fourth down stop to put his offense back on the field and scoring another touchdown in the first half. It continued to be a big night for the Golden Eagles, who start 2-0 this season for the first time since 2021. LeBlond will be on the road next week against Knox County in a Saturday game. Bishop LeBlond defeats Schuyler County 72-12.
Over at St. Joseph Christian, the Lions took on the Wildcards of Stewartsville/Osborn. Early in the first quarter, it was Cy Carlson setting his team up nicely with a lengthy run. A few plays later brought a touchdown run for the freshman Noah Dudeck and the Lions never looked back. St. Joseph Christian’s defense was hard to get by all night long and the team moved on to a 2-0 start to the season. They’ll stay at home next week to face Albany. St. Joseph Christian defeats Stewartsville/Osborn 54-0.
Back in 11-man games, East Buchanan hosted the Savannah Savages. Savannah started with the ball and took it the length of the field as Maddox Shoop threw a perfect pass down the sideline to Max Howe to give the savages a 7-0 lead. The Savannah touchdowns continued, with the Savages coming out on top and improving to 1-1 on the season. They handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season. Savannah will be at Kirksville next week, and East Buchanan will travel to Lawson. Savannah defeated East Buchanan 20-0.
