The lights were back on at football stadiums across St. Joseph Friday night as local high school teams returned to action around the area.

In News-Press NOW’s game of the week, St. Joseph Christian visited DeKalb. The Lions came off a winning season for the first time in years, and they kept the momentum going led by Peyton Hausman, who put St. Joseph Christian on the board first.

The Tigers answered back minutes later, but it would be their only touchdown. St. Joseph Christian took the game, winning by a score of 68-8 over DeKalb.

Christian will be back in action at home next week against Stewartsville with Osborn.

The city’s other four teams kicked off their seasons at home. Check out the FINAL scores for local high school football matchups.

The Central Indians were fired up for the season opener against Winnetonka, the first match-up between the two since 2019. Senior Gabe Fields, a Division I prospect, would be the story of the night, as Winnetonka struggled to contain him all game. Central defeating Winnetonka 45-19.

At Bishop LeBlond, the Golden Eagles opened up their season against North Shelby. LeBlond won this matchup last year, and the result was the same this time around. Bishop LeBlond defeats North Shelby 56-30.

Lafayette faced Center in a rematch of last year. It was all Fighting Irish, with an interception and a sack fueling the team to victory. The yellowjackets never got on the board. Lafayette defeats Center 34-0.

In the final local contest of the night, the Benton Cardinals in the second year under Corey Bertini squared off against Northeast Kansas City. The Cardinals won this matchup a year ago 44-0. This year’s result was almost as decisive. Benton defeats Northeast KC 62-12.

In other regional games:

Savannah falls to Pleasant Hill 14-10.

Mid-Buchanan defeats Midway 33-12.
