Savages trounce Fighting Irish

By Jacob Meikel
The Savannah Savages took care of business against Lafayette on Wednesday at Phil Welch Stadium, improving their undefeated record to 6-0 after a 14-1 win over the Fighting Irish.
The Savages didn’t take long to assert themselves as the more dominant team in Wednesday’s contest, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
The response from Lafayette in the bottom of the first would be minimal. A Garrett Duncan pop fly with two outs would not be handled by Savannah, allowing the ball to drop into right field and score a run to get the Fighting Irish on the scoreboard to make it 3-1 still Savannah in front. However, one run was all Lafayette could muster.
Struggles for Lafayette and good fortune for Savannah continued in the top of the second. Duncan, the starter on the mound for Lafayette, looked strong by getting two outs early in the frame but couldn’t get the Savage offense off of the field.
The Savages would explode in the second inning by adding six runs on the scoreboard off of Duncan. Duncan would eventually be pulled from the mound for fellow senior Isaac McQuiston. McQuiston would give up two more runs before he could stop the bleeding. Savannah went into the bottom of the second with a 11-1 lead before adding three more runs the rest of the way.
Lafayette would fall to 2-2 on the season following the loss, but the loss on Wednesday is the second consecutive game the Fighting Irish would be held to just one run. The Fighting Irish will have to put the loss behind them quickly as they will travel to Maryville on Thursday.
