Former Mound City Panther Tony Osburn has translated his success at the high school level to the Division I basketball level, helping lead the Omaha Mavericks to the NCAA Tournament.

Averaging 12.2 points this season for Omaha, good for the third best scoring average on the team, the four-time district champion from Fairfax, Missouri, will head to Providence, Rhode Island, for its first-ever matchup in the Big Dance.

A high-level scorer in high school, Osburn was a Missouri All-State selection all four years at Mound City, scored over 3,000 points in his career as a Panther and was the Missouri High School Basketball Player of the Year three times. Osburn even scored 62 points in a game against Worth County during his senior season at Mound City, a program record.

Osburn and the Mavericks earned the No. 15 seed in the West Division of the NCAA Tournament and will face No. 2 seed St. John’s on Thursday at 8:45 p.m. The Mavericks earned the automatic bid into the tournament by winning the Summit League Tournament Championship.

For Osburn, he’s seen steady growth in several statistical categories in large part due to the uptick in minutes during his junior campaign in Omaha. This season, Osburn is seeing career highs in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, assists, rebounds and points.
