A baby is dead and four others are injured following a four-vehicle crash involving semis Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 29 in northern Platte County.

The boy, who was less than a year old and from Sedalia, Missouri, was a passenger in a southbound Toyota Corolla, which was struck from behind by a semi that started to skid at about 3 p.m. on the interstate near Camden Point, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The report said that the Toyota then hit another semi before going off the road and into a line of trees.

The first semi then hit the back of the second semi, which struck a fourth vehicle, a Ford F-350, according to the patrol report.

The infant, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at Children’s Mercy Hospital Wednesday night. The driver of the Corolla, Patsy Withrow, 78, of Savannah, was taken to North Kansas City Hospital with serious injuries, and another passenger in that car, Terri Swartz, 44 of St. Joseph, also went to that hospital with minor injuries. The baby was in a car seat, it’s not unknown if Withrow was wearing a seat belt and Swartz was not using one, according to the patrol report.

The driver of the first semi, Samani Mahjouri, 57, of Lincoln, Nebraska, received minor injuries and elected to seek his own treatment, the patrol report said. The driver of the second semi, Sultan Singh, 31, of Manitoba, Canada, was not listed as injured, and the driver of the truck, Joseph Waxmonksi, 47, of Linwood, Kansas, had minor injuries and also planned to seek his own treatment, according to the report.
