Warrant scam brings warning from sheriff
By NewsPress Now
Buchanan County’s sheriff is warning citizens not to fall for a scam involving outstanding warrants.
Sheriff Bill Puett said while his staff do call people to notify them about outstanding misdemeanor warrants, they will not ask for money over the phone.
Legitimate calls from the sheriff’s office give people notice that they have two weeks to make arrangements with the court to get the warrant taken care of before it’s sent to deputies who will look to make an arrest, Puett said.
The sheriff urges residents not to give out personal information over the phone and reminds people the courts do not accept gift cards for bonds. Requests for these things are signs of a scam, he said.
Those who think they have a warrant outstanding can contact the Circuit Clerk’s Office at 816-271-1462 for information.
