A St. Joseph man has been charged with animal abuse in the case of a dog that was thrown off an Andrew County bridge.

Arnold D. Thomas is charged with the Class E felony in Andrew County. Sheriff’s deputies found the female dog, which was still alive at the time, below a 15-foot drop from the Dillon Creek bridge on County Road 375 on June 9 and it was taken to M’Shoogy’s Animal Rescue.

According to a probable cause statement, a St. Joseph resident was identified as the dog’s owner. When interviewed by deputies, Thomas admitted to taking the dog, which he said he thought was dead, wrapped in a comforter and dropping it from the bridge, court documents said.

Veterinarians at Angel’s Vet Express performed various surgeries on the pit bull, who they said had other underlying health issues, but the dog eventually succumbed to its injuries.
