See St. Joseph: Pumpkin mountains and musical spelling bees

By Kendra Simpson
St. Joseph is taking the fall season by storm with loads of entertainment and activities. This week’s edition of See St. Joseph has everything from pumpkin mountains to musical spelling bees.
Here in St. Joseph, fall does not really kick off until the lighting of Pumpkin Mountain at the annual Pumpkinfest.
For 28 years, the Pony Express Museum has hosted Pumpkinfest on its grounds for all of St. Joseph to enjoy for free. The festival features a ton of fall-themed activities such as the lighting of Pumpkin Mountain at 8 p.m. Friday, a children’s costume parade and contest beginning 11 a.m. Saturday, live entertainment, dozens of vendors, a petting zoo and more. For a full lineup of Pumpkinfest activities, visit the event’s Facebook page. Pumpkinfest kicks off 5 p.m. Friday and goes until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Pony Express Museum.
Robidoux Resident Theatre will bring the community back to their youth with their production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
The Tony Award-winning musical follows a group of unique and impassioned tweens, played by adults, as they compete for the Bee championship. Whether scripted, improvised or even with the help of a few willing audience members, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is sure to bring laughs and enjoyment from everyone. St. Joseph residents can catch the show 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Ruby Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online at rrtstjoe.org.
October is recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month and St. Joseph has a lot of plans to celebrate this weekend.
The fiesta kicks off with Latinos Connect’s 3rd annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Experience the rich culinary diversity of the St. Joseph Latin-American community with over 50 food vendors, or enjoy entertainment like traditional Latin dance, live music and cultural performances. The celebration goes from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Coleman Hawkins Park. Afterward, head around the corner to the Missouri Theatre for “512: The Selena Experience.” This performance is the closest anyone is going to get to a live Selena concert. The band, Los Chicos Del 512, has traveled across the U.S., Mexico and even Japan to orchestrate the finest Selena tribute. The show begins 7:30 p.m. at the Missouri Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online at paastjo.org.
