See St. Joseph: Philanthropy and laughs

By Kendra Simpson
This weekend will be full of laughs and philanthropy, both at home and across the world. In this week’s edition of See St. Joseph, there you’ll find opportunities to have a good time while helping others.
It’s time to tee up for the animals. Friends of the St. Joseph Animal Shelter is hosting its annual Puttin’ for Mutts golf tournament. Grab your best pals for an afternoon of golf and saving animals. Groups of four can team up for a chance to earn prizes for their golfing skills and showing-off abilities. Participants will get free hamburgers and hot dogs. All proceeds will benefit Friends of the Animal Shelter. The tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Fairview Golf Course. To register a team, visit the event’s webpage at petforu.com.
While Trails West! lives in the hearts of hundreds of St. Joseph residents, Elisabeth Wykert will put a spin on the event with her comedy and variety show “Trails NOTWest.” Wykert, a stand-up comedian, musician and internet personality, has been in the entertainment industry for more than 10 years and decided to bring her show back home after her “Fupa on Fleek” tour. She and some guests will take the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Missouri Theater. Tickets can be purchased online at jomotickets.com/events.
While enjoying the weekend close to home, why not help out people across the world? This was the driving force behind the “Sleep Well, Ukraine” duo concert. St. Joseph native Anthony Glise and New York-based guitarist Eve Weiss will present a series of concerts in August beginning in St. Joseph, extending to New York City and ending with a European tour. The concerts are being presented in support of the humanitarian project “Sleep Well, Ukraine” which raises money to build greenhouses and send garden seeds to civilian communities in Ukrainian combat zones. The duo will have three free performances this weekend in St. Joseph with a recommended donation of $10. St. Joseph residents can catch the performances at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Wyatt Park Christian Church, 2902 N. Leonard Road, 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Magoon’s Deli, 632 S. Eighth St., and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the St. Joseph Arts Academy, 2027 N. 36th St. There also will be reserved seating for a 7:30 p.m. performance Sunday at the Shakespeare Chateau, 809 Hall St., for $200. To reserve a seat, call the Chateau at 816-232-2667. The duo’s final local performance will be 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery, 424 Locust St. in Chillicothe, Missouri, for $25.
