See St. Joseph: Fun, furry and fierce shows

By Kendra Simpson
This weekend, there will be entertainment of the fierce and fluffy variety and you’re not gonna wanna miss it in this week’s edition of See St. Joseph.
Be sure to get your vocal exercises done by Friday, because Hazel’s Coffee Downtown will be hosting its Karaoke and Game Night. This event is free to attend and open to all who want to grace the stage with their musical talents and have some fun with friends. Along with free karaoke, the coffee shop will also have several games to play. Participants can call Hazel’s before arriving to select a preferred performance time or just walk in and sing. The fun begins at 6 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the Downtown Hazel’s, 310 N. Third St.
The Civic Arena has hosted the Globetrotters, countless high school graduations and even a circus or two. But this weekend, there are no elephants or basketball players because things will be much cuter with the St. Joseph Kennel Club Dog Show. From spaniels to dachshunds, to just the perkiest little fluff balls, we’re gonna see them all. Hundreds of dogs will take the stage this weekend and show off what good boys and girls they are. Not only is the show great for pet owner bragging rights, but it’s also an excellent opportunity for those looking to adopt a dog to get a firsthand look at the breed’s temperament, playfulness and cuteness. The dog show will go from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21, at the Civic Arena, 100 N. Fourth St.
Now maybe you’re looking for a little less cute and a little more fierce. If that’s the case, then the Dawn of a Legend drag show is the performance for you. After 20 years of being St. Joseph’s Sweetheart, Bianca Bliss is stepping down from the showgirl stage. To honor her two decades of memories, performances and dedication to the LGBTQ+ community, she, her cohost Lucy Couture, and several other starlets will bid the queen farewell with a show for the ages. Tickets are $10 for general admission. Doors open for the performance at 7 p.m. for the sold-out VIP tickets and 7:45 p.m. for general admission on Saturday, July 20, at the Metropolitan, 107 S. Sixth St. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
