ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- A major intersection improvement project planned for south St. Joseph will now begin in late April.

Improvements at U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street originally scheduled for April 1 have now been delayed until Monday, April 21, due to pre-construction utility work in the area.

The $8.3 million project will realign roadways and driveways and add turn lanes, sidewalks and storm drainage throughout five construction stages. All work is scheduled to be completed by December 2026.

Motorists will need to find an alternate route when Stage 1 begins on Alabama Street between Route 59 and Sherman Street.  The road will be closed during that phase, along with access to Lake Avenue and Brown Street.

Stage 1 -- which is anticipated to be completed by mid-August 2025 -- will realign Alabama Street on the east side of Route 59. It will also create right turn lanes to and from Route 59 to Alabama Street. Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday during daylight hours on the project.

The project is designed to improve sight distance, improve tractor-trailer turning movements, and increase capacity for vehicles stopped at the Route U railroad crossing.

A complete graphic of project staging can be found below and on MoDOT's website.
