Those who have yard waste to get rid of have the option to burn it this month.

During November and April, open burning of dry yard waste is allowed within the city limits between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Fires must be fully out by 6 p.m.

If weather conditions such as high winds are present or if open burning may create a health hazard, the fire chief or health director may invoke a temporary burning ban. No burning will be allowed on red flag days as designated by the National Weather Service. Open burning dates will not be extended due to weather blackout dates.

Other regulations include:

All fires must be in an upright container with a volume equal to no more than 55 gallons. A drum-size container of wire mesh is permissible.

Fires must be more than 15 feet from any building.

Only one burn container is allowed at each home.

Fires must be monitored by a person capable of containing it should that be necessary.

Only yard waste (leaves, brush, logs) can be burned. Trash, paper, lumber and building debris can’t be burned.

A hose or a container of water sufficient to contain a fire must be available

To report unsafe burning, call the city’s non-emergency line at 816-271-4777. Violations of open burning restrictions may result in a misdemeanor summons.
