A home in one of the city’s historic areas was heavily damaged by an early morning fire Wednesday morning.

The initial call for the fire at 1005 S. 12th St. came in just before 7 a.m. There were flames on several spots of the structure when the St. Joseph Fire Department arrived on the scene. The fire had been burning for a while, according to officials.

The home is located near the Patee House and Pony Express Museums, about a block from the site where the Jesse James Home originally stood. Fire Inspector Steve Henrichson told News-Press NOW the house involved in the fire was considered a dangerous building.

“It’s been on our watchlist for quite a while. I know when I went over to that office in June, it was one of the first houses I came out and completely photographed. There were people living here then …” he said.

The house is believed to have been sold within the last couple of days, Henrichson said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with information can call the TIPS hotline at 816-238-8477 or the fire department at 816-271-4603 with any information regarding the fire.
