No injuries reported in train derailment Monday night

Train derailment

No injuries were reported in a train derailment around 9 p.m. Monday near the area of Route 759 and Oak Street in St. Joseph.

Local authorities are asking residents to avoid the area as cleanup efforts get underway.

“Upon arrival, I walked up to the engine and it appeared that they hit a broken piece of track, which caused the two engines to both derail,” Justin Zamzow, a traffic officer with the St. Joseph Police Department, said.

Zamzow told News-Press NOW that cleanup with start with pulling the remaining cars away from the derailed ones. From there, Union Pacific will be responsible for cleaning up the two engines and any diesel that spilled.

The traffic officer added that this is the first derailment he has seen in his six years with the police department.

News-Press NOW will continue to follow this story for any future developments.
