The St. Joseph Safety and Health Council is offering a new driver’s education course for adults.

The council felt a growing need for the program locally as many adults driving on the roads don’t understand all the traffic laws.

“What I found is some young people don’t get their driver’s license until they become adults,” said Frank Till, executive director of the Safety Council. “And an even greater need that we’ve seen is from some of our immigrants that have come to the area who want to be responsible drivers but they don’t know the rules and the laws of the road here. We’ve had many contact us and got them signed up for private driving lessons and ultimately realized we should just provide an adult course.”

The two-day course will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 3 and 4, which includes four hours of classroom instruction per day.

In addition, participants will get four hours of driving included with the classroom portion.

“We think we’re going to see a fair number of people that may be new to our country and want to learn the traffic laws and how to be a better driver on the roads,” Till said. “We are hoping that it’s a success and we can do it again throughout the year.”

A driving permit must be obtained before signing up for the adult driver’s education program at the Safety Council and spots are limited.

Information on the costs of the program and how to register can be found at www.stjoesafetycouncil.org.
