Although Halloween serves as a night full of fun and frights, the St. Joseph Police Department is giving some safety “tricks” for those out getting treats.

In a Facebook post, officials with the SJPD listed ways to stay safe.

That includes making sure that costumes are bright and reflective. Adding glowsticks or flashlights will be a fun and safe addition to your child’s costume.

In addition, sticking to well-lit streets and practicing pedestrian safety, like using crosswalks, traveling in groups and staying alongside your child is important.

Police also said to make sure your child can see out of any masks and that costumes are fire resistant.

Drivers also need to be extra careful and watch for kiddos darting across the road.

The department recommends that parents check all candy for tampering before letting children dive in.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office also will be on patrol to ensure sex offenders in the area do not have house lights turned on and aren’t handing candy out.
