Atchison man arrested after boat, barge collision

By Jenna Wilson

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man following a boat and barge collision Sunday evening in the Missouri River.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday evening, officers responded to the 200 block of River Road after a report was received that a boating accident occurred involving a small fishing boat that had been traveling south on the river and a barge that was traveling north on the river, according to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

It was determined that two individuals were on board the small fishing boat: Marvin L. Reese, 50, of Atchison, was driving the boat, and Chandler A. Reese, 21, of Atchison, was a passenger.

Witnesses reported seeing the small boat collide with the front of the northbound barge. Both occupants on the small boat as well as the boat itself went underneath the barge.

Both subjects surfaced and were rescued by other boats on the river (one by a private boater and the other by the barge). Neither of the two men in the fishing boat were injured.

Marvin L. Reese was arrested by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 1 and charged for alleged boating under the influence. Reese is being held without bond in the Atchison County jail.
