The Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is reviewing a case of animal abuse that led to a dog’s death earlier this month.

On Aug. 2, a lethargic Great Pyrenees was found near Lake Contrary and immediately taken to Angel’s Vet Express in Andrew County.

Veterinary notes from Angel’s Vet stated that the dog appeared lethargic with his collar and chain grown into his fur. After cutting the collar and chain from its neck, massive amounts of maggots were discovered under its neck.

The dog was treated in the intensive care unit but died five days later due to health complications, according to the vet.

“The dog was also 50 pounds lower than weight,” said Gary Silverglat, co-owner of Angel’s Vet Express. “Anybody could see that this is totally inexcusable for any dog to go through. If we would have had the dog a month ago, he would still be happy and could have lived 15 years, but he had too much going against him.”

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett told News-Press NOW on Monday that the sheriff’s office investigation has been completed and sent to the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

“Our office has received the case and is in the process of reviewing all of the reports, medical records, media, etc.,” Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Michelle Davidson said in a statement.

With reports of animal abuse rising, Silverglat said more people should speak up to prevent situations like this from happening often.

“Even today, it’s nearly 100 degrees outside,” he said. “People need to be aware and if they see a dog chained out in the hot sun with no water or anything, call somebody. We have to do more to prevent this.”

News-Press NOW will provide updates on charges in this case when they become available.
