The St. Joseph Police Department arrested a suspect involved in a stolen vehicle case after a lengthy standoff Monday.

Police investigators and detectives approached the 36-year-old man, who was suspected of stealing a vehicle, on Monday afternoon, but he then fled into a residence near Eureka Street and West Valley Street.

The suspect refused to come out after several hours of commands to do so from law enforcement, including the Special Response Team, according to police Capt. Jeff Wilson.

Law enforcement officers then obtained a search warrant and were able to make entry into the house where the suspect was located in the basement area of the house hiding.

The suspect is now in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
