A St. Joseph police officer was taken to the hospital after a crash near South Belt Highway and Sacramento Street on Tuesday.

St. Joseph Police Sgt. James Tonn said an officer was responding to the scene of a crash at South Belt Highway and Pear Street with sirens on when a collision occurred with an SUV near Sacramento Street and South Belt Highway around 1:30 p.m.

The officer was taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries and released Tuesday.

“We’re still investigating as to who was at fault, so we don’t know yet,” Tonn said.

The police vehicle was carrying a ride-along passenger at the time of the crash but the individual was unharmed. Two occupants in the other vehicle involved in the crash were uninjured.

One northbound and southbound lane on South Belt Highway were closed down temporarily due to the crash.
