Police arrest man after standoff

A 28-year-old man was arrested after fleeing from a shots fired incident and locking himself in a house around North 13th Street and Grand Avenue on Tuesday evening.
Capt. Jeff Wilson of the St. Joseph Police Department said the situation started with a shots fired call in the area of 6200 Carnegie. Once officers responded to the area, evidence was found that the gunshots struck a residence. It was later confirmed that there were no victims struck by gunfire.
While investigating the scene, police got a description of a vehicle connected to the incident. The vehicle was a gray Volkswagen and was located by police. The vehicle then attempted to flee from police.
Wilson said the vehicle then came to a stop in the area of 13th Street and Grand Avenue.
“The vehicle lost control somewhat, ran off the road. They then ran into the residence,” Wilson said.
A standoff then began in the area, surrounding a residence in the 1500 block of 13th Street. The St. Joseph Police Department and the Special Response Team waited outside of the house for more than an hour before an arrest was made. Special Response Team vehicles were also deployed at the scene.
Before taking further action, police were obtaining a search warrant for the residence. Police then called for the suspect to exit the residence. He then was arrested on an outstanding warrant by police around 5:30 p.m. after exiting the house.
Wilson confirmed no one was injured during the standoff.
“No harm to anybody inside the residence. No harm to any officers on scene,” Wilson said.
Wilson said the suspect will be transferred to the Buchanan County Jail and that charges are expected to be submitted on Wednesday.
