Unwrapping the responsibilities of a pet for the holidays

Before gifting a pet during the holidays, officials with the St. Joseph Animal Shelter wants gift-givers to ensure the recipient is ready for a new furry friend.
Aubrey Silvey, Senior Animal Care Specialist said most adoptions she sees over the holidays are for kittens and puppies. If the pet is returned, it’s typically due to them being gifted and the person receiving them not knowing or committing to the animal.
“It’s really important, especially if you’re giving a pet as a gift, that you make sure the receiver is 100% wanting that and is ready for the commitment, and also that the pet you select is going to fit their lifestyle,” Silvey said.
Before deciding to adopt a pet and gift it for the holidays, here are some things to consider:
Research the breed and make sure it fits the owner’s capabilities
Allow time for the animal to decompress in the home
Remember the transition from shelter to home can be stressful
Be patient
Silvey said if the pet comes from the shelter, they will always take it back if the home is unfit. However, they will try their best to help with resources to work out a connection between the pet and the owner.
For pets that don’t come from the shelter, Silvey encourages pet owners to rehome pets of their own as the shelter is the last resort.
“You have to remember this is a big commitment,” Silvey said. “You’re looking at maybe 15 to 20 years, depending on the pet that you select.
