A fond farewell to ‘Street Smarts’

By NewsPress Now

As 2024 comes to an end, News-Press NOW is saying goodbye to an old friend. Alonzo Weston’s “Street Smarts” column is concluding its run.

Weston, a longtime and award-winning journalist with the St. Joseph News-Press, covered a range of topics over his years as a reporter, including education and social services. But telling the stories of people and places many overlooked was his specialty. He shone a needed light on situations and communities that are marginalized in our society and reported with compassion and understanding.

Through his column, Weston continued to share those stories as well as reflections on the changing landscape of our city and life in general. His is a face recognizable to many, not only for his work in this newspaper but as a leader in the African-American community and in music-loving circles, particularly where blues and jazz are concerned.

We are grateful for his years of service to News-Press NOW and St. Joseph as a whole. Thank you, Alonzo, for stories that will live on for years to come.
