A pillar of his community and a dedicated servant to his nation, Dr. George Fischer, DVM, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, at the remarkable age of 97. Born to Carl and Edith Fischer on Aug. 18, 1927, in Garden City, Missouri, George lived a life marked by commitment, leadership, and a deep care for others.

On July 31, 1949, George married Doris (Schollmeyer) Fischer, and together they built a loving family with daughter Carla and son Carl.

Colonel Fischer’s distinguished career in the Army spanned decades and took him across five continents. His year commanding the 144th Veterinary Corps in Vietnam showcased his leadership and dedication, earning him numerous accolades including the Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Superior Medal, and the Bronze Star.

A dedicated member of the Masonic fraternity for 75 years, George was a 33rd Degree Mason. He was also an active member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and the Shriner Moila Temple.

In recognition of his contributions to the veterinary profession, George was honored as the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Veterinarian of the Year and Missourian of the Year. Demonstrating his lasting commitment to the field, he established The Carl and George Fischer Scholarship Fund for the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine.

George was deeply engaged in his local community, serving on the Dekalb County road commission and as ACCD 911 Chairman. Known for his warm spirit and unwavering dedication, George was a cherished friend and considered family by many. He will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to serving others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Doris; and his sisters, Lucy and Ann.

George is survived by his daughter, Carla Stevens; his son, Carl Fredrick Fischer; his five grandchildren; and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Faith United Church, with inurnment to follow at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 25, 2025, at Turner Funeral Home, Maysville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to University of Missouri Veterinary College Fischer Scholarship Fund, or the Faith United Church Building Fund.
