Marlene Sue Canterbury, 72, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025, in St. Joseph. She was born Dec. 17, 1952, in St. Joseph, daughter of the late Mini and Robert Symington.

She married Lloyd “Alex” Canterbury on Aug. 18, 1987, and the rest is history. She was a homemaker first, she was always putting others first and taking them in. She also worked as a truck driver and bartender. Marlene was a bowling pro, the love of her life was dancing, loved being outside gardening and camping, and big into crafts. She was also an ordained Minister and took pride in marrying multiple of her grandchildren and friends. Marlene also gambled at the casino, it was her favorite pastime, and was a member of a bowling league, WIBC.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Margie Boatwright; sisters, Dorothy Lee Bradley, Virginia Scroggins, Gloria Jean Shaver, and Betty Jo Liu; and brother, Larry Symington.

Survivors include husband, Lloyd “Alex” Canterbury, of the home; her best friend, Buddy; daughters, Ann Hughes, of St. Joseph, Misty (Vernon) Jones, of Atchison, Kansas, and Rolanda (Frank) Fuemmeler, of St. Joseph; son, Charles “Chuck” (Miranda) Dunlap, of Maryville, Missouri; sister, Jonna (Rick) Clark; 15 grandkids; 22 great-grandkids; and numerous nieces, nephews, and others.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, at Rupp Funeral Home. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Keys Christian Fellowship, Pastor Richard Bradley officiating. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Center or American Heart Association.
