Mary Ann Flugrad, 91, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, 2024, at the Field Point Assisted Living facility, St. Joseph.
Mary Ann was born Aug. 22, 1933, to Frank and Anna Tyliski. She was a graduate of The Convent of the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph. Mary Ann retired from Family Guidance Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Richard H. Flugrad; two grandchildren, Jacob Madden and Eric Merritt; her parents; a brother, John Frank Tyliski; her uncle, Bud Wisneski; and her aunt, Gertrude Wisneski.
Mary Ann is also survived by seven children, Michael Flugrad (Linda) Connecticut; Michelle Bolonyi (Bill), St. Joseph, David Flugrad (Julie), Arkansas, Daniel Flugrad (Diane), Buckner, Missouri, Lisa Antle (Scott) Gower, Missouri, Lori Flugrad, Lathrop, Missouri, Julie Flugrad, Lenexa, Kansas; 16 surviving grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren, with two on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Joe (John), of St. Joseph; along with one niece and three nephews.
Mary Ann was a devout Catholic being raised and then married at Saints Peter and Paul church. She moved to Queen of the Apostles church and then St. Francis church. She was very active in her churches with anything she could help with. She especially enjoyed the women’s groups like Saints Peter and Paul’s Sewing Circle, in the earlier days. Mary Ann also enjoyed helping at the Food Bank.
Mary Ann was a devoted wife and mother. Her main thought of the day was providing for her family. Not only did she work eight hours a day at the previous Methodist Medical Center as an executive secretary, but came home to cook for eight hungry mouths plus herself, house cleaning, laundry and many other duties of raising a large family. I can’t remember a time when she thought of herself. She always put others first.
After a six year stay in the home of our sister, Lisa, it became necessary to move Mom into assisted living at Field Pointe. Even in the assisted living facility, putting others first continued. She was always quick and excited to get involved in different functions, lend a hand to a fellow resident, or just be a friend to someone in need. She especially enjoyed doing puzzles and being a member of the group which critiqued the various food items served at the meals in the facility. Mary Ann will be truly missed.
