DENTON, Kan. – Mary Joseph Schmitt, 69, of Denton, Kansas, passed on in St. Joseph on Nov. 27, 2024. Born in St. Joseph on Feb. 19, 1955, to Herman Weingart and Frances Weingart (nee Black), she was the third child of four, and only daughter. Mary attended Midway High school before studying nursing at Methodist nursing school, and later received her Master’s in nursing from UMKC. She spent her career as a nurse working for Heartland regional medical center, first in the ICU/CCU units, and then as a nurse practitioner in the cardiology department.

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Weingart, father Herman Weingart, and George and Etta Catherine Thuman, whom she considered a second set of parents, and is survived by her husband, David Schmitt Sr.; sons, David Schmitt Jr. “and partner Mya Ham” and Timothy Schmitt and wife, Brianne Ball; three beloved grandchildren, Quenton Schmitt, Graham Schmitt, and Amelia Schmitt; brothers, Paul Weingart, John Weingart and wife, Nancy Weingart, and James Weingart, and wife Becky Weingart; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, at 10 a.m. A visitation will be held at Heaton-Bowman Smith Chapel Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be direction to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
