RUSHVILLE, Mo. – Eugene “Gene” Anthony Miller, 94, of Rushville, Missouri, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, in Atchison, Kansas. He was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Troy, Kansas, son of the late Josephine and Joseph Miller.

In his early years, he attended Pleasant Ridge School, a one room school house. Due to hard times, Gene made the selfless decision to leave school and help his family on the farm. He proudly served in the United States Army, was active in Korean War Conflict in the Military Police and trained as a fingerprint specialist in the Korean War. He married Shirley Bradford Sanger on July 22, 1961.

Gene was a farmer, a puzzle master, great dancer, and enjoyed playing cards. Gene loved visiting with fellow farmers at the local barber shop. He was a grand story teller who will always be remembered for his infectious laugh, telling great jokes, but most of all, his love for his family. Gene was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a 25 year member of the Rushville Lion’s Club, where he supported the Bike-a-Thon fundraisers.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Genevieve (Ora) Mehan, Esther (John) Saxton, Henrietta (Del) Fortney and JoAnn (George) Sittenauer; brother-in-law, Al Bartkoski; sister-in-law, Donna Miller; and great-granddaughter, Paylynn Spencer.

Survivors include wife, Shirley Elaine Miller, of the home; daughter, Vicki (Doug) Hickman, of DeKalb, Missouri; daughter, Brenda (Ron Scamurra) Miller, of St. Joseph; son, Brian (Shannon) Miller, of Rushville, Missouri; daughter, Regina “Gina” (Michael) Hunt, of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Ashley, Lyndsey, Whitney, Cole, Brady, Riley, Jacque, Zach, Isabel, Henry, Michelle, and Morgan; great-grandchildren, Mack, Miles, Maggie, Camden, Carter, Khylan, Judah, Caleb, Weston, Benjamin, Lucas, Grayson, Nathan, and Baby Waller #2 on the way; sisters, Georgia Hampton and Alvera Bartkoski; brothers, Ray (Theresa) Miller, Alfred (Pat) Miller and Don Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church where the family will receive friends following the Rosary to 8 p.m. on Friday Nov. 29, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Celebrant Father Jonathan Davis. The Interment will be at Sugar Creek Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday. Memorials are requested to the Rushville Sugar Creek Levy Association in care of Lanny Frakes or DeKalb High School F.F.A.
