COLUMBIA, Mo. – Donald Gene Malson, age 76, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on Sept. 15, 2024, at Boone Hospital. He was born on Oct. 26, 1947, in St. Joseph, a son of the late Lester and Alma (Denham) Malson. He was united in marriage to Susan Lutz on Dec. 22, 1974.

He attended Highland Jr. College in Kansas before graduating with his undergraduate at Central Methodist University. He went on to complete a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Truman State University. After graduation he taught and coached at Ralls Co., Palmyra, and Excelsior Springs High Schools. He went on to coach football at Missouri Western State University and Southern Arkansas University. He retired after 25 years as the Director of Career Planning and Placement at Columbia College. During this time he also assisted with the golf program and the basketball score table.

He enjoyed spending time with his family as well as playing golf, pickleball, and cards with the guys. He loved coaching and made an impact on many athletes’ lives. The joy of his life was attending Andrew’s sporting events and coaching alongside him.

Donald is survived by wife, Susan; son, Andrew; brother, Rex (Alberta) Malson; and other extended family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Columbia Country Club, 2210 N. Country Club Dr, Columbia, MO 65201. Please come dressed casually.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to Central Methodist University with proceeds to benefit the Don Malson Football Fund. Checks should be made to Central Methodist University, Advancement Office, 411 Central Methodist Square, Fayette, MO 65248. Please put Don Malson Football Fund in the memo line.
