Annora E. Newman, 88, St. Joseph, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2024.

She was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Maryville, Missouri, to Vincent and Thelma (Brown) Smith.

Annora married Robert J. Newman on July 2, 1969. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1986.

She worked as a nurse in Maryville and Asbury Hospital, in Salina, Kansas, before returning to St. Joseph where she worked as a CNA at Saxton’s. She later operated a daycare out of her home for 20 years.

Annora was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

While a bit ornery and known as a jokester, Annora was very family-oriented and giving, and loved spending time with children. She was known as the “neighborhood mom” who was always there to help others. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; sister, Alice Swyhart; and niece, Dawn Grimm.

Survivors include her son, Robert Newman (Tracy Moore); grandchildren, Leo Newman and Heidi Newman; stepchildren, Linda Schmitt (Pete), Roberta Roberts, Paula Owens (David), and Sheila Gatewood; sisters, Betty Grimm, Wanda Dryer, and Rita Wade; many nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

The family will gather with friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
