PLATTE CITY, Mo. – John “Rocky” Lloyd Townsend, 80, Platte City, Missouri, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024.

John was born on Nov.22, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a 1962 graduate of North Andrew High School.

Mr. Townsend, a Military Veteran, proudly served his country for over 20 years, and retired as an E-6 Tech Sergeant.

John was a talented and skilled truck mechanic for over 43 years and retired from ABF Truck Lines after 23 years of dedicated service.

Mr. Townsend was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 222, and a faithful member of the First Nodaway Church Savannah. John was an avid baseball and softball player. He not only enjoyed playing for numerous years but also enjoyed coaching his sons and grandchildren as well. They shared many fond memories on the ball field together.

John married Jima Kunels on Sept. 26, 1974, in St. Joseph, they were looking forward to celebrating their upcoming 50th Wedding Anniversary in September.

John is survived by his wife, Jima, of the home; two sons, Russell Townsend (Trisha) and Chad Townsend (Shephathiah); five grandchildren, Cheyenne, Dakota, Jordan, Payton and Grayson; sister, Cathy Townsend; nieces and nephew, Kristen, Nicholas and Hannah.

Funeral Service 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2024. Interment Savannah Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
