PENROSE, Colo. – Sandra (Sandy) Mae Crockett passed away from this life on the early morning of July 8, 2024, with family by her side. Sandy and her daughter, Denise, shared and enjoyed one last Diet Coke moments before her passing.

Born Aug. 4, 1939, to Claude Donald and Freida Mae (Gillenwater) Glasscock in South Bend, Indiana. Sandy was the second born of nine children. She attended several schools before graduating from DeKalb, Missouri, High School, where she met her future husband, Davy Crockett. They were married Nov. 22, 1958, and eventually settled down on the farm at DeKalb. Together they raised two children, Paul and Denise.

Sandy loved country life. She enjoyed milking cows, gardening (she was exceptionally good at it!), crocheting afghans for family, and most importantly, she had a servant’s heart for taking care of loved ones.

Sandy was employed at Atchison Leather Products as a sewist for several years. After Davy passed away, she moved to Colorado to live with Paul and helped raise her three young grandchildren. While in Colorado, she began volunteering at the North Denver Cares Food Pantry where she made special friends, whom she stayed connected with until her very last day on Earth. They were like family to her. In 2014, she moved to Spanaway, Washington, with Denise and family. Although she had begun the natural decline of getting older, she still enjoyed gardening, pulling weeds, going for walks, and crocheting many newborn hats for the American Heart Association.

In 2022, Sandy moved to Penrose, Colorado, to be nearer to family. She loved being on a little 4-acre farm with chickens, ducks, goats, guineas, peacocks, dogs and cats. She would sit outside for hours (in between pulling weeds!) and enjoy the birds and farm animals. As she continued to age, she adamantly disdained that she was the one being taken care of! Sandy always wanted to helpful and useful in some way and felt that she needed to “pull her own weight” at all times. Much of this mindset was shared in her stories about growing up in such a large family. Sandy was an extremely hard worker who was tough, yet a fiercely loving woman.

Sandy is survived by her daughter, Denise (Gerry) Threatt, of Penrose; her “more-than-just-my-daughter-in-law” Wendy Crockett, of Montrose; sisters, Kay Barnett, of Rushville, Missouri, Dorlis Day, Bonnie Eberhart, Linda Seran, and Debbie Sowers, all of St. Joseph; and brother, Don Glasscock, of St. Joseph; also, eight much-loved grandchildren: Ashley Lutz, Nealy (Jesse) Stemple, Jessica (Stu) Bailey, Karilyn (Matt) Woywod, Trevor (Megan) Lutz, Ian (Taylor Duschane) Crockett, Jeremy Lutz, and Sierra (Dustin) Cowan; and seven great-grandchildren who brought her incredible joy: Carson Van Dyke, Brooklyn Van Dyke, Kaden Lutz, Jessa Stemple, Cameron Crockett, Rowan Stemple and Rhett Stemple, with two more she was anxiously expecting before the end of the year. And she would not want us to forget her furry companion of 10 years: Tipper!

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Davy Crocket; son Paul Crockett; granddaughter, Amanda Crockett; infant brother, Larry Glasscock; and sister, Donna Glasscock.

Per her wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. We will have a friends and family gathering on what would have been her 85th birthday, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, 2 to 4 p.m. at Holiday Inn, 401 Main, Atchison, KS 66002. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
