Norma Jean Clizer, 95, went to be with her Lord, peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
She was born Oct. 11, 1928, the only child of John J. and Emma M. (Hoshor) Scowden, Savannah, Missouri. On June 29, 1950, after both graduated from the University of Missouri, Norma married Herbert E. Clizer, her Savannah High School sweetheart.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and daughter, Denise Kay Clizer Kopp; and son, Gregg Norman Clizer.
She is survived by her son, Kevin Clizer, (Suzanne), Weston, Missouri; and daughter, Linda Sloat, (James), Urbana, Illinois. Surviving grandchildren include Emily Kopp (Tom Farrell), Ben Kopp (Susan), John, David, and James Clizer, Lindsey Clizer and great-grandsons, Archer and Wesley Farrell. Her daughter-in-law, Suzanne (Dee) Clizer, Gregg’s wife, and her son-in-law, Kelvin Kopp, Denise’s husband, also survive.
Norma joined the Savannah United Methodist Church in childhood and served in all areas, especially as a Sunday school teacher and historian. She was also active in the Hackberry 4-H Club and was a 75-year member of Chapter EJ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. For 25 years she enjoyed substituting in the Savannah RIII School District.
Norma loved to travel and was always making plans for the next trip she and Herb would take. On their own they visited Europe, all 50 states, and much of Canada. In later years they looked forward to spending February in Arizona.
Norma’s B.A. degree from M.U. was in English Literature and reflected her lifelong love of reading. She will be remembered as a very loving and proud parent, grandparent, and great grandparent.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
