Doris M. Bushno, 95, passed away on Tuesday April 23, 2024, at Benedictine Living Community, in St. Joseph. A longtime resident of southern Buchanan County, she was born on Aug. 23, 1928, at DeKalb, Missouri, the daughter of the late Thomas and Thelma (Alsup) Grable.

Doris was a hard worker all her life beginning on her family’s farm as a child, as a housewife and mother, as a factory worker, and as assistant manager of a hotel. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and quilting. She also enjoyed reading historical romance novels, following the Royals during their heyday, watching the Wheel of Fortune and Hallmark channel, completing crosswords and word searches, fishing, and especially going to the casino. But above all, she enjoyed being with her family and loved them all. And in turn they all loved her and will miss her greatly, especially her loving nature and big smiles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Marilyn Thomas; great-grandson, Jack Price; sisters, Laverne Maxine Long and Joan Lash; stepfather, Roy Keith; brothers, Wesley Grable and Billy Grable; three nephews and two nieces.

She is survived by sons, Tom Jones and Bobby Burchett, of St. Joseph; daughter, DeAnna (Bill) Nowak, of DeKalb, Missouri; grandson, Kevin S. (Michelle) Thomas, of Holden, Missouri; granddaughter, Teri Lynn Thomas, of Overland Park, Kansas; grandsons, Jason Nowak, of Rushville, Missouri, Brody (Lauren) Burchett and Dalton Burchett, of St. Joseph; niece, Sheryl (Greg) Marsh of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California; and nine great-grandchildren; six great- great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Joan) Grable, of El Cajon, California; three nieces and five nephews and their children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Mosaic Hospice and Living Community for their caring and kindness toward Doris in her final days and her watchful and kind friend and neighbor in the community, Louise Davis.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Mosaic Hospice or DeKalb Westlawn Cemetery.
