Kathryn L. “Kay” Tootle, 100, a cherished matriarch, and stalwart of her community, passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2024, in St. Joseph. Born on July 16, 1923, in Dexter, Kansas, to Irvin and Verna (Topham) Lisetor.

A proud alumna of Central High School’s class of 1941, Kay carried the spirit of her education into every facet of her life. She was first united in marriage to Cash Whitman III in 1944, until his passing in 1961, then found love again with Jack Tootle in 1964, who preceded her in death in 2009. Her lifelong dedication to family and community stood as a testament to her enduring strength and kindness.

Kay is lovingly remembered by her children, Kathy Ames and John Tootle (Mary); and grandchildren, John (Kristin) and Michael Tootle.

Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Helen Kane; daughter, Vicki Fletcher; and her grandson, Rew Fletcher.

Her enjoyment in life was evident through her active involvement in various organizations, including the Christ Church Altar Guild, Amy Golding Guild, Noyes Home for Children, the Albrecht Kemper Museum, Wismo Club, and the Missouri Western Ambassadors. As a former member of the Ladies Union Benevolent Association, and as a seasoned Girl Scout and Brownie Scout Leader, Kay shaped young lives with enthusiasm and sage guidance.

Kay’s inexhaustible dedication to both the St. Joseph Country Club and the Benton Club remains an unparalleled example of service and sociability. Her grace, camaraderie, and the laughter she shared will be deeply missed, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Farewell Services and Public Livestream 1 p.m. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service.
