WATHENA, Kan. – Thelma R. Hewins, 103, of Wathena, Kansas, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, at her home.

Thelma was born on March 5, 1920, in Wathena, to Alouis and Anna Marie (Miller) Staudenmaier.

She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Thelma worked for Sherwood Medical as a Finisher.

Thelma married Kenneth Frederick Hewins on June 19, 1942, in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Linda Andrews; son, Leroy Hewins; sisters, Elizabeth Tharman, Martha Terrell and Mary Grace Koons; brothers, Andrew, Phillip, and Joseph Staudenmaier; grandson, Nicholas Irby; and great-grandson, Christopher Stivers.

Survivors: daughters, Patricia Odegaard, Nancy Marie, Jo Ellen Hewins, Helen Hewins and Eva Marie Hewins-Deisler; sons, Glenn Hewins (Patty) and Harvey Hewins (Alinea); 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren, one on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wants to thank Dr. Gaul and his staff. We appreciate the many kindnesses of friends, extended family, her church community and hospice care provider.

May she have a peaceful rest after 103 years and 355 days of life.

Celebration of Life Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Wathena. Rosary: 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2024, with visitation to follow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wathena.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Renovation Fund, Wathena EMS or the St. Croix Hospice.
