Herbert “Herbie” Leo Burkeybile, 83, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at Mosaic Life Care, in St. Joseph. He was born Dec. 14, 1940, in St. Joseph, son of Cora (Weiser) and Gilbert Burkeybile. He married Pamela “Penny” Proud on Feb. 1, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois. He spent many of his working years in Chicago, where he drove a garbage truck and after 33 years he retired from Waste Management and moved back to St. Joseph. He loved being outdoors, especially working in his yard and traveling.

He was preceded in death by parents, Gilbert Burkeybile and Cora Maddox; siblings, Robert Burkeybile Jr., Barbara Green and Sonny Maddox; and granddaughter, Rachel.

Survivors include wife, Pamela “Penny” Burkeybile, of the home; daughter, Lisa (Jeff) Schmidt, of Crystal Lake, Illinois; sons, Herbie (Isabell) Whidden, of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and Tommie Whidden, of Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara (Larry) Barns, of Tennessee; grandchildren, Tyler, Travis, Corina, Hannah, Jenny and Sarah; niece, Mandy Burkeybile, of St. Joseph; several great-grandchildren; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burkeybile has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
