Northwest invites community to emergency response training

NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY

Northwest Missouri State University is encouraging the northwest Missouri community to participate in an emergency and disaster response training.

Northwest's Emergency and Disaster Management program in Maryville, Missouri is accepting students, employees and community members to engage in is free Campus-Community Emergency Response Team training next month.

"The main purpose of this training is to teach basic life-saving techniques that can be employed during a localized disaster to potentially mitigate the loss of life,” Travis Surprise, a Northwest instructor of emergency and disaster management, said. “Additionally, it is important during a disaster that one does not become a victim. This training will reinforce that emphasis.”

The free basic C-CERT training course is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 through Sunday, March 23 in Room 107 of Valk Center on the Northwest campus in Maryville. Participants can register by contacting Travis Surprise at tsurprise@nwmissouri.edu or 660-562-1008.

The CERT training program is described by Northwest as, "a 24-hour Federal Emergency Management Agency course designed to educate citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their communities. The program trains participants in basic disaster response skills, including first aid, fire safety, search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations."

According to Northwest, "Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT participants can assist others in their neighborhood, campus or workplace when professional responders are not immediately available to help. Northwest EDM students are encouraged to take CERT training for one of their three-credit requirements of 36-491 Field Experience in EDM."

To register for the free basic C-CERT training course at Northwest Missouri State University, contact Travis Surprise at tsurprise@nwmissouri.edu or 660-562-1008.
