The St. Joseph Police Department responded to an unusual but non-threatening incident Tuesday when a local woman walked into a fire station with a World War I explosive device.

According to a release from the St. Joseph Police Department, the explosive device was found among the woman’s elderly father’s belongings.

Upon notification, the St. Joseph Fire Department and St. Joseph Police Department coordinated to ensure public safety. As a precautionary measure, the area was assessed, and the device was safely examined.

The device was determined to be a non-lethal projectile from a WWI-era weapon and posed no immediate threat to the public.

Police warn that situations like this serve as a reminder that any suspected explosive or hazardous military materials should never be moved or transported.

If anyone comes across such an item, contact 911 immediately so that trained professionals can assess and handle the situation safely.

The St. Joseph Police Department would like to reassure the public that there was no danger at any time and the device has been properly secured.
