LeBlond boys basketball extends win streak with a victory over Savannah

It was a packed gymnasium at Bishop LeBlond High School on Friday night as the Golden Eagles hosted the Savannah Savages for a doubleheader showdown. The girls took the floor first, with Savannah coming out on top in a 40-23 victory. On the boys side, it was a dominant performance as well, but this time, it was LeBlond who controlled the game from start to finish, securing a 59-41 victory.
The first points of the contest came from the free-throw line, as LeBlond’s Trey Icke knocked down one of two attempts. Savannah answered with a free throw of its own to tie the game. The teams exchanged baskets early, with Savannah holding a slim 5-4 lead midway through the first quarter, until LeBlond found its rhythm.
It started with a Gannon Sowell three-pointer from the left wing, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 7-5. A few possessions later, LeBlond capitalized on a Savannah turnover, finding a cutting Jacob Winklebauer for an easy layup.
Savannah struggled defensively to close out the opening quarter, allowing LeBlond to go on a 9-0 run in just over two minutes. That surge pushed the Golden Eagles’ lead to 16-5 heading into the second quarter.
The Savages ended their scoring drought at the free-throw line, as Jaiden Martinez sank both attempts to cut the deficit back to single digits. But another cold stretch followed, this time lasting over three minutes. LeBlond kept its momentum rolling, with Cooper Waterman knocking down a three from the top of the key to extend the lead to 19-7, forcing a Savannah timeout.
Despite the stoppage, the Savages still had no answers for the Golden Eagles' high-powered attack. LeBlond poured in nine more points before Savannah finally broke through with another layup.
For one of the few moments in the game, both teams traded baskets to close out the half, with LeBlond maintaining a commanding 35-20 lead at the break.
Needing a spark, Savannah came out firing in the third quarter, putting up 13 points, their most in a single period. However, LeBlond matched the energy, tallying 14 points to keep its lead intact.
The Golden Eagles' dominance carried into the fourth quarter, sealing a convincing win to improve to 20-1 on the season. Meanwhile, Savannah dropped to 8-12.
