In May, a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Instructor at Lafayette High School was placed on administrative leave and students let their voices be heard about the decision.

Master Sergeant Jaamal Anderson, who had been a JROTC instructor for nearly five years with the St. Joseph School District, was placed on leave pending the outcome of a district investigation.

At the time, the district made only this statement: “The St. Joseph School District is aware of the situation involving Mr. Anderson and is handling it according to district policy. The SJSD is not at liberty to discuss specific details concerning personnel issues. Thank you.”

Several students and even a parent came forward in defense of Anderson, expressing their concern that the district’s decision to place the instructor on leave was “unfair.”

No reason for Anderson being put on leave was ever made public. District officials told News-Press NOW that Anderson submitted a resignation letter and “as this is a personnel matter, the district will not provide further details about the instructor.”
