Empty Bowls event supports hunger relief
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — After a brief hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Empty Bowls Luncheon is making its return to St. Joseph.
The last Empty Bowl Luncheon was held in 2020, with roughly 300 people in attendance.
The Empty Bowl Luncheon came to fruition 15 years ago, once it was clear that hunger was a prominent issue within the community. Over time, the event has seen prospering success, with more than $300,000 raised to support hunger relief.
"All the proceeds from this event are going to go back to support families in need," Empty Bowls CEO Chad Higdon said. "The restaurants are coming together to donate their time and food for the event. It's really great to see businesses and individuals come together for a great cause, supporting second harvest centers."Â
The luncheon saw 10 local chefs prepare different types of soups for attendees to sample.
All proceeds will be used to help reduce issues with hunger in the St. Joseph area.
"All the other organizations do such a great job with helping the homeless people, those who are in need," Phyllis Moulder, who has attended several Empty Bowls events, said. "It's a great way to raise money."
Now that luncheon's long-awaited return is complete, organizers from Second Harvest said they plan to hold the event annually once again.
