Several people still need assistance to have a merry Christmas through a community program.

AFL-CIO of St. Joseph said 473 families are waiting for help through its Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program.

This year, 893 applicants were chosen for the program, and as of Dec. 11, 420 families have been adopted by 181 adopters.

The AFL-CIO is asking for the community’s support to either adopt families or make toy, household monetary or gift card donations.

Adopters receive a list of items that families or seniors in need have requested. They purchase the items and then wrap them up before delivering the gifts.

Last year, the AFL-CIO of St. Joseph was able to help 894 families which included 2,780 individuals, 1,505 of which were children.

Some families applying for help have no income whatsoever and the majority were at 100% or below poverty guidelines.

Anyone interested in becoming an adopter or donating to the 2024 Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program should contact the AFL-CIO office at 816-364-1131.

The goal is to have everyone adopted by Dec. 24.
