The United Way is looking for volunteers to share a love for reading with local students.

The agency needs adults to read with children through the United Way Reading Adventure program this fall. Volunteers can sign up to read once, a few times or on a regular schedule to kids at Carden Park, Edison, Hosea, Hyde and Pershing elementary schools.

The program, which was launched in 2011, aims to help students improve their reading skills. More than 600 people have volunteered with Reading Adventure through the years.

Students in the program also receive books to encourage reading at home, so new and gently used books for elementary children also are needed.

Those interested in volunteering to read or donating books can contact Jodi Flurry at 816-364-2381 or jodi.flurry@stjosephunitedway.org or register online at stjosephunitedway.org/pie.
